Chávez is proud to be part of the Dual Language Immersion program within MMSD!

In dual language immersion (DLI), native Spanish speakers and native English speakers maintain and develop their first language while acquiring native-like communication and literacy skills in a second language. Academic content is taught and assessed in two languages from Kindergarten through 5th grade at Chávez, 6-8th grade at Jefferson Middle School and 9th – 12th grade at Memorial High School.

In DLI, students are taught in both English and a target language; in the case of MMSD, Spanish.  Our programs are “two way,” which means that about half of the students are native Spanish-speakers and half of the students are native English-speakers.  Every student in the classroom is a model of their native language and a learner of a second language.  This student makeup is essential for the design and success of the program.  Therefore, as a part of the lottery process, the classrooms are built at a 50:50 to 60:40 ratio based on language background.

Parents/guardians are required to attend a DLI Parent Informational Session. It is very important that parents/guardians understand the goals of the DLI program and understand that by enrolling your child in DLI, you are committing to keeping him/her in DLI (to the best of your ability) through at least 8th grade, minimally, due to the length of time it takes to learn a second language. Please click here to see a schedule of DLI Parent Information Sessions  (once sessions are scheduled).

The 2020-21 school year DLI Lottery application opens on:

-Monday, December 16th, 2019 for currently enrolled students.
-February 24th, 2020 for new students to the district.

The application window closes on April, 24th, 2020 at 4 p.m. Lottery results will be mailed to parents/guardians beginning May 08th, 2020.
